Shifting from Common Practices to Best Practices for Serving Students with Disabilities
Special education expert and author Nathan Levenson's best-selling book Six Shifts to Improve Special Education and Other Interventions has received widespread acclaim from district, general education, and special education leaders alike. In this Book Study, Levenson will facilitate discussion of the highest-impact opportunities from the book to dramatically raise achievement for students with mild-to-moderate disabilities, as well as collaborative discussion of strategies for shifting from current practices to these research-backed best practices.
Sessions Overview
1. Chapters 1 & 2: The Need for Change and Increasing the Role of General Education (NOV 12)
This session will discuss why a new approach is needed and why special education can’t be the primary support for most struggling students.
2. Chapters 3 & 4: Rethinking Intervention and Academic Support (DEC 10)
This session will discuss the best practice research on how to accelerate learning and best provide academic support. It will cover students with and without disabilities and also explicitly address the challenges of the pandemic fueled learning loss.
3. Chapters 7 & 8: Rethinking Scheduling and Management (JAN 14)
This session will round out the book study focusing on how best to manage these best practices. New approaches to supporting students requires not only new schedules, but also new schedulers and new ways of scheduling. It also requires that management, reporting lines, roles and responsibilities also change.
